You’ve Got to See the Reemergence of the Great Wave by Kenichi Wan
Odi is a personalized conceptual figure created and has evolved since its inception. Odi has gone a long way from years back. Odi is Kenichi Wani’s alter ego in the realm of art. Then came the creation of Vivi, a friend to Odi. Both Odi and Vivi are voyaging a route, ready to tackle a longer route and go the distance. The enchantment vis-à-vis the challenges are captured in their voyage in Reemergence of the Great Wave.
Qube Gallery’s artist Kenichi Wani is currently experimenting on an older style of painting that commenced when he first painted Odi. Kenichi is naturally curious to see through the years how he can improve the style he is much adept with and is using at the present. With natural inclinations to trace and know more about his Japanese roots, wave is a prominent supplement to his most recent flamboyant works. In retrospect, that significant wave in his older work prompted Kenichi to step back and with a tenacity to improve on his craftsmanship, has dubbed this exhibit as the Reemergence of the Great Wave. Autobiographical and fantastical, the colorful works of Kenichi never fail to visually indulge onlookers’ eyes with stories and colors, or better yet, colorful stories rendered in both small and big surreal works.
In a gist, Odi and Vivi are stranded at sea and they face all sorts of trouble. The clincher? They got away with it. Such resilience. Who would not identify himself or herself with Odi and Vivi? Who would not love to share the same plot or design? This, perhaps, is the very reason why a closer scrutiny of the colors, composition and character of the canvases of Kenichi ultimately resolves any art spectator to be enthralled, subsequently captivating the heart to endow and keep Odi and Vivi in their homes or custody.
Influenced and inspired by the colors of Van Gogh, the iconography of Hokusai, and the character and style of Takashi Murakami, Kenichi Wani successfully innovated the identities of Odi and Vivi. Juan Luna and many Renaissance painters enthused Kenichi on composition, the bent of which are traced in his works.
Kenichi Wani was born in Cebu in 1985 and graduated in U.P. Cebu Fine Arts. His whimsical and very playful style inexorably invokes his interesting Filipino-Japanese contextual story. He has one work entitled “The Story of Moises” which is very significant because it relays so much about his birth and the story of how he almost died after birth. The rest is history, Kenichi lives and thrives in both local and international art scene, having participated in various art fairs and exhibitions like Tubo Cebu Art Fair, NCCA’s Cebu Tagay Stories in Manila and Art Kaoshiung in Taiwan.
On a more personal note, Kenichi loves to paint (that’s undeniable) and he believes that art is for everyone. One of his biggest dreams and goals is to inspire others, changing their perception towards art as elitist and should belong to the both the affluent and the modest ones. He wants Cebu to stand up and become a major powerhouse in the Philippine Art arena and even to the whole wide world. He quips, “I am currently getting myself more involved in making this a reality”.
Once again, say hello and get to know more about Odi and his friends in Reemergence of the Great Wave at the Foyer Space of Qube Gallery, Crossroads Banilad, Cebu City. Join the Artist Reception on September 22, 4:00 to 9:00 PM. Exhibit runs from September 6 – 30, 2018.

37 Years of High Fashion; Arcy Gayatin leaves a Legacy of Edginess and Elegance
Arcy Gayatin: A Legacy of Luxury in Fabrication
By: Allain Dumon Fonte
The brand Arcy Gayatin gave the Queen City of the South a distinct reputation in the fashion industry. The fashion line of Arcy Gayatin sets the bar higher each year for clothing luxury and fabrication techniques.
Araceli “Arcy” Ancajas Gayatin is the daughter Galileo Ancajas and Remedios Zanoria Ancajas who founded Cebu’s home brand, Gal’s Bakery. Arcy went to the University of San Carlos and studied Political Science. And just like Dr. Muccia Prada, who completed her Ph.D. in Political Science and established the luxury line of Prada, Arcy also got in touch with her artistic side and started her own fashion line. However, it was not Prada that influenced Arcy. Arcy was introduced to fashion and tailoring at a very young age by her mother, Madame Remedios Anacajas whom they dearly call Mama Eme. Mama Eme was running a tailoring business back then. It was called Arabel; named after Arcy and her sister Belma. Ara from Araceli and Bel from Belma. In those years, Arcy was fascinated by fabrics and was intrigued by how to manipulate the fabrics to come up with fashion-forward designs without compromising comfort and taste.
After 37 years of creating haute couture pieces for the most fashionable personalities in the Philippines, Arcy Gayatin is now laying down her sketchpads and pens to rest. As she enjoys her retirement, may be on a cruise to the Bahamas or a holiday to the Swiss Alps, Arcy Gayatin has left the fashion industry a legacy of elegant and edgy clothing ensembles that understand and define the shape of women; without compromising comfort and good taste.
To salute the lady who brought Cebu fashion to the world, a retrospective exhibition of Arcy’s incomparable masterpieces can be seen today at Ayala Center Cebu’s The Gallery; curated by fashion editor and writer, Clint Holton Potestas, and interior and fashion designer, Jul Oliva.
BALANCE. Arcy Gayatin is known for her perfect symmetrical lines when fabricating. She knows how to balance edginess and class; understanding well the strength and the finesse of a woman.
RHYTHM. Arcy’s expertise in draping and fabric manipulation can be seen in how she achieves rhythm between architectural lines and soft fabrics like silk and cashmere.
TEXTURE. With her thorough knowledge on fabrics, Arcy Gayatin has achieved the perfection of fabrication by working on different types of fabrics and creating a single piece of art out of them.
HARMONY. The simplicity of the silhouette plus the intricacy of the details create a wonderful harmony, making Arcy Gayatin’s design a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The photos below show an up-close look at the intricacy and the exquisite craftsmanship of Arcy Gayatin’s fabrication techniques:
THE SPIDER WEB: one of Arcy’s genius fabrication techniques.
MATCH and PATCH: Arcy’s unique fabrication craft by patching layers of different types of lace and lace patterns
PLEATS: The perfection of symmetry in pleats on silk.
LA ROSE BLEUE: U.P. student, Danielle Alessandra Deutsch, inspired by the artistry of Arcy Gayatin, designed this midnight blue dress. The cabbage rose made from layers of silk organdy gave this evening ensemble a romantic appeal.
