The tricky part about resolutions, though, is actually keeping them. So while there are lots of ways to go about it, one way of making sure you stick to new fitness regime is to find one you actually like. Here’s a guide for the uninitiated, and for those looking for something new.

CrossFit

Crossfit (Photography by John Ong/Zee Lifestyle)

What it is: The sport of fitness: Constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity across board time and modal domains. Hour-long classes at affiliated gyms (“boxes”) include a dynamic warm-up, a skill development segment, the high-intensity WOD (“workout of the day”) and cool-down.

Perfect for: Those who are easily bored and need variety.

It is never boring. Each time you go to the box, you get a different workout that challenges all your muscle groups and all aspects of your athleticism. It is also a short, sharp workout that you benefit a lot from. I have joined all sorts of group workouts in the past, and I’ve never seen as much results as I do now. – Brenda Magno

Where to go:

  • CROSSFIT SUBTERO
  • Unit 2, Jamestown, Mantawe Ave., Mandaue

  • CROSSFIT PINTADOS
  • F. Cabahug St., Mabolo

High-Intensity Interval Training

HIIT (Photography by Oliver Echevarria/Zee Lifestyle)

What it is: A cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. It promotes strength, balance and performance.

Perfect for: Those who want a total body workout.

Right from the door, it’s different—devoid of equipment, treadmills and machines. Training has become like praying, an activity that you can do anytime, anywhere, even alone. – Zach Elisha Go

Where to go:

  • EPIC PERFORMANCE & FITNESS
  • Block 88, Oakridge Business Park, Banilad
  • Facebook

Yoga

What it is: A low-impact physical exercise that involves holding stretches. It requires meditation and breath work, and develops flexibility and balance.

Perfect for: Those who want to keep calm and carry on.

The reason I love yoga is because I can practice anytime, anywhere whenever I feel like, as all I need is a quiet and small space. My previous workouts were purely physical, whereas yoga is a more calming, relaxed exercise with the same benefits. – Rose Hennessy

  • Banilad Town Centre and Raintree Mall
  • Facebook

Spinning

What it is: Indoor cycling is a cardiovascular workout that involves aerobic exercise on a stationary bike. It’s a low-impact workout designed to increase one’s endurance.

Perfect for: Those who want to have fun.

Let’s be honest—spinning isn’t actually easy. The bursts of high speed and additional movements, along with the constant cycling, are enough to make you feel more than a little sore the next day. What makes it so enjoyable (and more doable!) is the energy of the people pedaling next to you—with the loud music and changing lights, it’s a workout party that anyone would want to get into! – Shari Quimbo

Where to go:

Pilates

Susanne Cobonpue doing Pilates (Photography by Ezekiel Sullano/Zee Lifestyle)

What it is: Pilates is a fitness system said to have developed from yoga. It puts more emphasis on the core, as well as lengthening the body and centering the spine, using exercise machines.

Perfect for: Those who like to stay focused.

The very controlled, slow and precise movement throughout each exercise is what makes it different from other physical activities. I like the large variation of exercises because it never gets boring. We do a different routine with several variations every time. Everything is tailored to my needs. I leave the studio always tired, and sometimes exhausted, but also extremely relaxed and elated—which I didn’t feel with other workouts. – Susanne Cobonpue

Trattoria da Gianni: The Guidicellis open their family kitchen in Cebu https://zee.ph/trattoria-da-gianni-the-guidicellis-open-their-family-kitchen-in-cebu/ https://zee.ph/trattoria-da-gianni-the-guidicellis-open-their-family-kitchen-in-cebu/#comments Mon, 11 Apr 2016 09:45:48 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=11663 In Italy, family and food are taken very seriously. Take it from the Guidicellis, a family whose love for food runs in their blood. Spearheaded by the father and daughter tandem, Gianluca and Giorgia Guidicelli, Trattoria da Gianni is the family’s way of honoring the memory of their patriarch, Gianni Guidicelli, who always expressed his desire to put up a restaurant.

Born in Northern Italy, Gianni, father to Gianluca and grandfather to Giorgia, Matteo, and Paolo, moved to the Philippines in the late 1970’s, fell in love with the country, and never left. All throughout Gianni’s life in the Philippines, Gianluca shared that despite the number of Italian restaurants in town, his father always preferred home cooking from their very own kitchen.

Time caught up with the food-loving Gianni, and he passed away last year, leaving two of his helpers, Antonia and Jean, with no one to attend to any longer. Since then, the idea of putting up a family restaurant has always hung over the head of Gianluca. As a result, Trattoria da Gianni was created. The fruition of the restaurant gives Antonia and Jean something to take care of now that their beloved Gianni is gone. It’s also the family’s way of thanking the two women who have served them for more than two decades.

Trattoria da Gianni, which translates to “a small Italian restaurant by Gianni,” is casual and unpretentious. All the love that goes into the restaurant doesn’t only reflect in their food, but it extends to their cozy and inviting interiors as well, giving you the warm-hearted welcome you’d get at an Italian friend’s home. As a family restaurant, Trattoria da Gianni serves the best of Italian home cooking with time-honored recipes right from the Guidicellis’ kitchen.

One thing that sets Trattoria da Gianni apart is that instead of pizzas, they have a wide variety of bruschettas. With toppings ranging from Parma ham with figs and fresh ricotta, to Taleggio cheese with apricots, the Guidicellis make the Italian staple more exciting than usual.

Diners can also expect freshly made pastas with homemade sauces for that personal touch, different kinds of mouthwatering mozzarellas, a variety of fresh salads, traditional Italian cold cuts and cured meats, premium Italian cheeses, hearty soups, and of course, delectable desserts. The menu also indicates which dishes were Gianni’s personal favorites. Some of these include the minestrone, spaghetti with pesto Genovese, ragu della Nonna (spaghetti with tomato meat sauce and Parmiggiano Reggiano), and tiramisu.

Crafted out of love, Trattoria da Gianni is the Guidicellis’ way of welcoming everyone into their kitchen, hoping to spread the love that Gianni had for food across Cebu. At Trattoria da Gianni, home is where the heart is.

Cheers to the new Bibendum Wines in Streetscape https://zee.ph/11624-2/ https://zee.ph/11624-2/#respond Sat, 06 Feb 2016 06:18:31 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=11624 Since 2012, Bibendum Wines has been the go-to shop for fine wines in Central and Southern Philippines. It continues to uphold their mission of offering a wide selection of quality wines from across the globe by opening their new home at the 2nd floor of Streetscape at Maria Luisa Road, Banilad last Saturday, February 6.

To maintain exemplary quality and ensure optimum storage and holding conditions, Bibendum utilizes refrigerated containers and climate-controlled storage facilities, including Vinecaves. At Bibendum Wines, you can try the wine prior to purchasing with their enomatic machine, which contains 8 different kinds of wine. The first taste is free, and the succeeding tasting portions are at a minimal amount.

With wines coming from France, USA, Chile, Spain, Australia, and South Africa, to name a few, choosing from perhaps the widest selection in Cebu may seem daunting. For those who simply do not know where to start, Bibendum provides a point system to make the selection process a lot easier. Professional wine critics have been using a simple 100-point rating to score wines, which is the quickest and most convenient way to determine the quality of wine.

Choosing good wine is made more convenient by looking at these ratings, which are indicated in Bibendum Wines’ labels. Bibendum Wines prides itself in having the best wine portfolio at the most affordable prices.

The Streetscape branch also has a small deli with the best sausages, cold cuts, and cheeses from premium shop, Santis Delicatessen to pair with your wine. An al fresco area with tables and chairs are available for those who want to enjoy their selection right there and then.

Bibendum also gives you the option to have wines delivered at your doorstep through Food Panda or their website.
