Monique posted in her Instagram account a 14-second video of dumping an bucket of ice water on her head after nominating furniture and home accessories designer, Alexandra Von Furstenberg (@avfhome); jewelry designer, Jennifer Meyer Maguire (@jennmeyerjewelry); and interior designer, Michael Smith (@michaelsmithinc) with a caption that says:
“I accepted the #ALS #icebucketchallenge I nominated @avfhome @jenmeyerjewelry @michaelsmithinc Good luck guys!”
It may seem like a silly internet fad similar to the hyped-up #makeuptransformation (Get over it, you guys!), but the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is apparently a campaign by the ALS Association which fights amytrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. You either dump a pail of ice cold water over your head and challenge three other people to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100 to the non-profit association.
Love it or hate it but it’s actually making a difference: The ALS Association reports that it, and its 38 chapters, received $4 million in donations within just two weeks which is $2.88 million more than what it brought in last year at the same period (July 29-August 12).
“We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, president and CEO of The ALS Association, in a release on the association’s website. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative.”
