A collaboration between Carlostito Gothong, Khristina Lim and owner of the popular Japanese cake shop Hideo Goto, Fujinoya’s first venture outside Japan brings the highly acclaimed cakes to Cebu. “The way the Japanese bake the cakes is very different, and very meticulous,” Khristina explains. “They don’t add a lot of sugar, so that you can really taste the ingredients.” That we can truly attest to with the Fujinoya Special Chocolate Cake—hands down one of the best slices in the city. The alternating layers of fluffy sponge cake and creamy filling is coated in chocolate, and the rich flavor of dark chocolate shines through in every bite.

To complement the selection of pastries, Fujinoya also offers coffee and entrees. “We felt like we needed to have real food on the menu too,” Khristina shares, “because some people really look for actual meals.” Here they serve classics with a Japanese twist—the hotdog in a bun is served with wasabi mayo and nori flakes, tender short ribs are served in teriyaki sauce, and a donburi menu is available for those looking for something more filling.

It’s certainly a welcome addition to the dessert offerings available in the city—after all, Fujinoya has been operating in Japan for 50 years, and remains a popular destination among the locals. “We plan on adding a few more cakes to the menu every quarter,” Khristina says, telling us that Japanese bakers come in every few months to demonstrate the baking techniques and come up with new recipes. As long as that chocolate cake is on that menu, I’ll definitely keep coming back for more.
