Here’s How GAOC Busts Some of the Most Popular Dental Myths https://zee.ph/heres-gaoc-busts-popular-dental-myths/ https://zee.ph/heres-gaoc-busts-popular-dental-myths/#comments Fri, 26 Jan 2018 02:38:37 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=21349

Although modern dentistry has come a long way, dental health has its share of myths that lead to poor or incorrect oral hygiene habits, and put off people from visiting their dentist regularly.

Located at the 3rd Level, Seaview Wing of SM Seaside City Cebu, the Gan Advanced Osseointegration Clinic (GAOC), one of Asia’s most advanced and world-class dental centers and the country’s biggest dental clinic, helps bust some of the most popular myths. Rule out the truth from the myth now and get the proper dental care that you need.

MYTH #1: TOOTH WHITENING WEAKENS TEETH

TRUTH: Most whitening products that are widely available are generally harmless. The active bleaching component is carbamide peroxide, which gradually breaks down into hydrogen peroxide that lifts stains safely from the enamel. What can be dangerous is applying aggressively high concentrations of pure hydrogen peroxide, which can traumatize teeth and cause sensitivity.

MYTH #2: FLOSSING IS NOT IMPORTANT

TRUTH: Brushing alone will only clean the top and outer surfaces of the teeth and gums.  Floss acts as an interdental cleaner, designed to reach between teeth in places that toothbrushes can’t reach. The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that flossing before brushing teeth also helps make brushing more effective: With less plaque caught between your teeth, the fluoride in toothpaste can get to more parts of your mouth.

MYTH #3: THE MORE YOU BRUSH, THE HEALTHIER THE TEETH

TRUTH: Over-brushing does more harm than good. People who brush longer and harder than necessary are at high risk of causing dental damage by scratching the tooth enamel and chafing the gums. A study by the Newcastle University’s School of Dental Sciences in England concluded that aggressive brushing does not remove extra plaque.

MYTH #4: BABY TEETH ARE NOT AS IMPORTANT AS PERMANENT TEETH

TRUTH: Just because they fall out doesn’t mean they’re not important. Teeth are indicative of a baby’s health and development, holding space in the jaw for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums. They also help babies chew, smile, and eventually speak. Parents should visit a dentist once a baby’s first tooth comes out, so they learn the appropriate tooth care and develop a healthy routine as the child grows up.

MYTH #5: NO PAIN, NO PROBLEM

TRUTH: Regular dental appointments will give dentists the early opportunity to notice problems long before they become obvious, thereby preventing them before they become too serious. For instance, a cavity does not necessarily hurt, but by the time the tooth hurts enough to have it checked by the dentist, the damage might be more extensive.

MYTH #6: PLACING ASPIRIN NEAR A TOOTHACHE WILL EASE THE PAIN

TRUTH: Enamel cannot absorb aspirin, so merely placing a tablet near the source of the pain will not work. In fact, it can actually damage the gum tissue. Swallowing aspirin down and letting it enter the blood stream is more effective in reducing a toothache, but take note not to drink too much, as it can also cause burning effects on the gums.

MYTH #7: ONCE THE DECAYED TOOTH IS TREATED, THE DENTAL PROBLEM IS OVER

TRUTH: Without good oral hygiene, decay can develop around the restorations. Whenever a tooth is filled or replaced, it requires maintenance, such as using interdental brushes, regular toothbrushing, and flossing. A regular checkup at least twice a year will help monitor recurrent cavities.

MYTH #8: SUGAR IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF CAVITIES

TRUTH: Sugar, in itself, does not lead to cavities. Cavities are formed through a combination of naturally occurring bacteria and acid that damages the teeth; this is often triggered by carbohydrates.  Good oral hygiene habits will easily prevent them.
