By Allain Dumon Fonte

Like a phoenix that resurrects from the ashes, so shall Miss Cebu 2022 blooms to a new dawn in the Queen City of the South.  After 5 years of hiatus and whispered controversies that surround it, the Cebu City Tourism Commission is relaunching the search for Miss Cebu.   Now is truly the high time that Cebu City must crown her new queen to bring back the spirit of pride amongst Cebuanos; and to have a queen to lead us in rekindling our passion to make Cebu City number one, again.

Miss Cebu was officially relaunched on the 16th of September 2021 at IL CORSO Mall at the South Road Properties; headed by Cebu City Tourism Commissioners, Hon. Philip Rodriguez and Hon. Cinbeth Orellano, and pageant director, Engr. Junget Primor.  The launching was attended by Miss Cebu past winners, Cebu’s celebrated couturiers: Dexter Alazas, Edwin Ao, Jun Escario, and Jun Protacio; and celebrating with them are the ladies and gentlemen of the media and of the Cebu City Tourism Commission Office.

The Relaunching of Miss Cebu.  Miss Cebu Winners:  Loise Angelique Tan-Young (Miss Cebu 2007), Kris Tiffany Janson (Miss Cebu 2009), Karla Paula Henry-Amman (Miss Cebu 2nd runner up, 2006), and Eva Psychee Patalinghug (Miss Cebu 1st runner up, 2014)

Miss Cebu…Then!

In the age of industrialization, the countries in the Asia Pacific region were coping with globalization and international trade.  The Philippines is on a strategical advantage being the gateway to the East; and made Cebu as the Queen City of the South for her central location.  Gifted with pristine beaches, abundant highlands, developing urban lifestyle, rich heritage, and friendly and skilled people, Cebu became an incomparable jewel for many investors.  So in1983, some leaders and a few stakeholders from the Hotels, Resorts, and Restaurants Association of Cebu blessed with foresight, took advantage of the opportunities, and promoted Cebu as a travel and holiday destination; rebranding Cebu as an “Island in the Pacific”.  Hence, the birth of Miss Cebu Tourism in 1984.

Miss Cebu Tourism Coronation Ceremony

The Miss Cebu Tourism became an avenue to search for a Cebuana who shall embody the characteristics of Cebuanos and promote the tourism landmarks of the region.  The Miss Cebu Tourism ran from 1984 to 1999 and has produced beauty queens that effectively promoted Cebu to the world. Because of this, Cebu was featured countless times in international travel magazines like “The Voyager”, “Adventure Travels”, “The Traveller”, “Explore”, and “Getaway”.  The pageant has also helped in establishing strong international relations with Japan.  This is the period when Japanese employees were reinforced with travel incentives.  Through the promotions of Miss Cebu Tourism, Cebu became one of the destinations for the Japanese’ travel incentives; and this paved way for direct flights to Cebu from Narita and from Osaka.

Miss Cebu Tourism also paved way for direct flights from Hong Kong; and also from Singapore.  Miss Cebu Tourism winners promoted Cebu’s landmarks, culture, arts, and crafts through a series of fashion shows and cultural trade and events in Singapore that stirred the interest of the tourists and investors alike.  Hence, Cebu City also became a venue of trade and commerce with Singapore in the mid-1980’s.

Furniture and Accessories Designer and Businesswoman, Miss Janice Banez-Minor is Miss Cebu Tourism 1984. The first to win the title and the crown.

In 2001, Miss Cebu Tourism evolved to Miss Cebu with the aim of promoting not only our tourism but also the city’s economic strengths, making Cebu as the new business hub in Asia.  From the years 2001 to 2016, Miss Cebu queens have successfully put Cebu on the globe as an industrial, trade, and tourism leader in the Southeast Asian region.  The pageant showcased the best of Cebu that intrigued numerous tourists, investors, and even global leaders to visit this small but bustling metropolis.

Miss Cebu… Now!

In the past decade, Miss Cebu also became a platform for the candidates to be the voice for the voiceless.  Candidates do not only promote Cebu; the pageant also became a stage to discuss current events and promote advocacies in uplifting the lives of Cebuanos; to ensure their welfare, to promote equality, and to implement social policies.  Through the years, Miss Cebu has elevated the standards of beauty pageants in the country and is even admired by international pageant enthusiasts.  It has gathered a pool of ladies with intellect, integrity, and with substance to lead the Cebuanos to a new era of empowered women and with a more inclusive society.  Miss Cebu has redefined the essence of femininity with the sense of style and leadership.  Because of this, Miss Cebu has produced women who are leaders in their fields; from lawyers, doctors, public servants, tourism directors, industry managers, entrepreneurs, and even business leaders.

In 2019 up to the present, the corona virus pandemic has impacted all the economic sectors in Cebu, from the tourism industry to real estate, arts, fashion, manufacturing, business process outsourcing, food, travel, and retail industries.  It is high time that Cebu must stand again on its feet and bring back its glory.  Thus, the intense clamor to bring back Miss Cebu.  Miss Cebu is no longer a mere beauty pageant; it is a wheel of development and a catalyst of economic advancement through its promotions of what the Queen City of the South can offer to the world.  In the past, Miss Cebu winners and candidates worked tirelessly as our ambassadors and brought us to a dawn of progress, and they shall do the same in this most challenging time.

Who really is Miss Cebu?

Merce Abellana (Miss Cebu’s Five Prettiest 1986-1987) with daughter Raine Baljak (Miss Cebu 2016).  Photo grabbed from Oro Galleria.

The year 2022 is the rebirth of Miss Cebu.  Miss Cebu’s candidates shall represent not only the tourism and the economy of the city; but they shall bring to the world our pride from the city’s crystal coastlines, lush hills, world-class urban living, deep history and rich heritage, exquisite delicacies, ecstatic festivals, thriving industries, skilled craftsmen, and esthetic arts; making Cebu as a UNESCO City of Designs.  Our candidates shall be forward-thinking and strong-willed leaders who are empathic to the needs of her fellow Cebuanos, motivating the younger generation.  And our Miss Cebu candidates will instill pride amongst Cebuanos with our roots and our identity as descendants of Rajah Daya, Datu Humabon, and Hari Lapu-Lapu; making us proud as people with unparalleled civilization enriched by colorful cultures and unequalled artistry.  This shall be a quest not only for the most beautiful Cebuana, but a search for Cebuanas who can support and promote sustainable livelihood and lifestyle; and finally, to raise the bar higher for pageantry by producing women that can shape a society, that can bring the world to Cebu, and that can redefine the meaning of women empowerment.

So, who is really Miss Cebu?  It can be you.  The search for Miss Cebu 2022 is now on-going.  If you believe that you are the woman that Cebu City needs, then please, present yourself and take the Cebuanos with you to a future of certainties, progress, and peace.

5 Things We Love About Nailplay, a Luxury Nailspa https://zee.ph/5-things-love-nailplay/ Tue, 22 Oct 2019 04:24:58 +0000 http://zee.ph/?p=32121 Tucked into a quiet area in the hustle and bustle of Banilad, you can find a haven where you can look fabulous and fresh in one go.

Nailplay is a luxury nailspa that was a brainchild of five ladies, who wanted a place that was clean, had a relaxing ambience away from the city, and basically, was their own secret getaway.

Upon seeing the studio, a lush landscape is the welcoming sight. To get into the nailspa, guests have to cross a little wooden bridge, above a pond filled with koi fish. Immediately, it’s obvious that a trip to Nailplay guarantees a relaxing experience.

Faye Louise Veloso, the woman who manages Nailplay, explains that the studio’s overall concept is more in line with wellness.

“It’s really a cross between an ordinary nail salon and a spa, so we refer to Nailplay as as Nailspa,” Louise says.

The nailspa, as it’s lovingly called, offers services such as their Luxury Urban Escape, which involves an hour of relaxation through their SpaPlay Mani and Footspa, followed by your choice of a deep back and shoulders massage, or their 30-minute hair treatment.

Of course, Nailplay also offers nail services, with a choice of regular or gel nail polish. For those who want a fancier take on nails, you may also get nail art done by their staff. To complement the massage and nails, try Nailplay’s Signature Mink Eyelash Extensions These are lightweight and natural-looking, as it comes in three different lengths to match one’s natural eyalashes. And, to round off the pamper session, they also offer eyebrow waxing and threading! There’s no need to hop from one place to another to get all these services done.

For those who want to have bridal showers or a pamper-filled birthday bash, Nailplay also offers packages that fit the client’s needs. The package includes the exclusive use of the venue for three hours, manicure and pedicure for all the guests and light catering for the event. During the event, guests may upgrade to any of the other services that the nailspa offers.

“It’s been quite popular with bridal showers, but we recently hosted a children’s birthday party,” Louise shares. “I’ve been told the kids had a blast!”

Louise believes that Nailplay’s venue plays a huge role in its success.

“The landscaping was done beautifully, and it doesn’t even feel like you’re in the heart of Cebu!” She says. “Our friendly beauty therapists are also what make Nailplay what it is—our top customer service is why our clients keep coming back.”

While Louise is often between Cebu and Sydney, she shares that treating herself is as simple as taking the time to eat well, do some exercise, or get a footspa—at Nailplay, of course. Her personal favourite service though, is their Signature Mink Eyelashes.

“One of the beauty therapists even thought I had naturally long lashes,” she recounts, “without realising I just had them done!”

While Nailplay has only one store in Cebu, Louise divulges that they have plans of expanding in the future.

“I think the wellness market in Cebu is ready for our luxury and boutique Nailspa services,” she states. “Hopefully within the next five years, you’ll see more Nailplay stores in similar unique locations.”

Here’s How to Look Fab and Get the Ultimate Confidence Boost https://zee.ph/heres-how-to-look-fab-and-get-the-ultimate-confidence-boost/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 05:48:01 +0000 http://zee.ph/?p=30786 Many of us have our go-to spots to help give us a confidence boost. It may be in the form of a beauty parlour to get a new ‘do or a fresh colour for your claws (you know, fingernails) or a skincare center for your facials and beauty drips.

Whatever it is, we’re bound to have our personal favourites, especially if it’s about good quality service. But if you’re someone who hops from one favourite place to another, having to book appointments ahead and stressing yourself out by allocating enough travel time to get there—considering crazy, unpredictable traffic—it might not be the most ideal state of mind when you just want to relax.

There’s something reassuring about having a one-stop shop for your beauty needs. A place where you don’t need to worry about booking multiple appointments, rushing to the next one on time, or having to brave the traffic to get there. Somewhere that offers premium services. This begs the question: is there a place like that in Cebu?

The answer? Yes, there is—The Fab Lab Lifestyle.

A specialized beauty studio, The Fab Lab Lifestyle is a Cebu-grown brand established by Janie Flores after what she calls an unconventional beginning: a heartbreak.

I used to date a guy and on the day of our break-up, one of the last things he told me was this—’I think you look better without your lash extensions on because they look fake and they make you look old’,” she shares.

The words stuck to her and made her vow to find an alternative for lash extensions. Janie discovered the keratin lash lift and tint, an innovation to the traditional eyelash perming. She shares that at the time, it wasn’t offered in Cebu yet and cost at least P4,000 to get it done in Manila—that’s not including airfare and accommodation yet. And so she decided to introduce the procedure to Cebu.

“The early days of The Fab Lab Lifestyle can be described as this: me alone in a small room, catering to lash lift appointments,” Janie recounts. “I remember seeing the happy reactions of each client and their more confident smiles after seeing the results, and that encouraged me to go on! It was priceless.”

A glimpse of Janie in the old Fab Lab studio

As time went on, Janie’s clientele grew and she knew she had to open a studio and provide more services. She had cases where her clients had short lashes and preferred lash extensions, which encouraged her to offer lash extensions.

“As I did not want them to experience the same fate that I did,” she says, “I made sure to offer lash extensions that look so natural, people can second-guess if it were lash extensions or just naturally beautiful lashes.”

For Bright Peepers

With extensive research coupled with working with international instructors, Janie’s training took at least a year. From there, the VIXEN Lash Series was born. It’s a collection of lash extension variants made of the lightest and most advanced hypoallergenic antibacterial midnight sable lashes, bonded with hypoallergenic lash glue and utilizing a patented technique from one of Korea’s best lash artists. The Fab Lab Lifestyle also offers premium lash enhancement services like the lash rehab program, lash lift, tint and lash botox.

Their flagship lash service, the VIXEN lash extensions, has several parts: the semi-lift, the upper lash extensions, and the lower lash extensions. The process takes about three hours in total, but it’s worth the wait, and it gives you some time to doze off; after all, you can’t be distracted by anything, since your eyes will remain closed throughout the whole process. Make sure your phone’s switched off or put on DND—that’s ‘Do Not Disturb’—mode the whole time, though, so you won’t disturb other customers. Whether it’s a client, your mother or your beau, they’re all put on the back burner for those three hours. You’re there to relax, remember?

A sleek aesthetic welcomes guests at The Fab Lab Lifestyle

Each lash service ensures that you’re looking alive, alert, and awake—and definitely enthusiastic after seeing the results. Fab Lab’s specialists make sure to ask the client for their preferred look, and offer their suggestions as well.

“The goal is to make them look as natural as possible,” says Joy, their assistant manager.

The Fab Lab Lifestyle cares about their clients, so their team ensures that each customer likes the outcome before they leave the studio. Customer satisfaction is important to them, so they can easily adjust according to their clients’ liking—no charge incurred. Aside from enhancing lashes, they encourage customers to take better care of their lashes as well.

Fab Lab’s Lash Rehab Program is a painless nano-needling program that promotes lash growth and follicular repair. The progress of each client’s lashes is measured by a ruler every week. It’s a great option for those who want to take a break from lash procedures and just give their lashes the rest it needs.

“We try not to apply lash extensions on baby lashes, since that would cause damage to the still-growing lashes,” adds Joy. “We advise our clients to avail of our products that help with lash growth.”

These products include the Lash Tree, a water-based treatment that doesn’t affect the effectiveness of the bond that holds down the lash extensions. There’s also the Treatment Mascara for the lash lift, also water-based, since it’s not advised to wear waterproof mascara.

For Fresh Nails

One of their FAB women, Danessa Onglatco

While you have your lashes done, you can also avail of their gel nail services, which use Korean techniques and tools. Their signature French Fade is a dainty look that everyday women can wear, especially because it’s low-maintenance. Each layer of gel nail polish is applied delicately and cured under a specialized UV lamp.

The French Fade is Janie’s second favourite service at Fab Lab, the first of course being the VIXEN Lashes.

“It’s my go-to nail art design because of its clean aesthetic, which is so versatile that it can go from casual to dressy,” Janie shares. “I believe these are total mood boosters that will make a woman feel instantly more confident after their visit.”

There’s also the marble design, which gives your nails a fancy touch. For those who prefer plain, solid colours, a wide range of colours are available to choose from. Customers may opt to change the colours of their signature designs, and that’s how you know The Fab Lab Lifestyle cares for their customers.

For Glowy Skin

On top of their lash and nail services, they also have nutrient drip therapy and the Korean glow BB procedure, the latter of which is unique, as it’s patterned according to your skin type. That means that even if you have normal, dry, or oily skin (or a combination of any of the three), the facial will adapt to it and leave your face fresh and glowing.

Currently, this service is undergoing improvements. Joy divulges that their team is flying to Korea this month for further training, but for what exactly, she doesn’t share. It seems like Cebuanas are in for a pleasant surprise once The Fab Lab Lifestyle’s specialists apply their overseas training to their practice.

The Fab Lab Lifestyle goes beyond just providing high-quality procedures, as the brand revolves around women empowerment.

“What we are really offering is a lifestyle of balance and a community of empowered women.” Janie states. “We want to provide services that can make a woman feel incredibly confident and empowered, just as how women should be.”

With this contagious energy, Janie and the team at The Fab Lab Lifestyle plan to make every Filipina embrace the empowered woman that she is and with it, empower others as well.

“We aim to equip each of our client the confidence she needs to face hurdles and conquer the roles she is given—may it be being a mom, a career woman, a student or a woman who is still trying to find her place in the world.” she adds. “Whichever role our client may be in, we aim to remind them they have the ability to succeed in these roles and conquer them FABulously!”

After a rundown of their offerings, it’s clear that they want their customers to leave their studio without any worries. Their team hopes to bring the brand to the capital, to bring their level of service to the women of Metro Manila.

“As a homegrown Cebu brand, Manila is a big step for us,” Joy says. “We hope to get a lot of support once we make this move.”

It’s still in the works, but their dream of opening a branch in Manila seems like it’ll be a reality within this year.

“The services offered in the Cebu branch will be offered in the Manila branch but we will be adding more services and innovations as well,” Janie adds. “The concept would also be different, but I won’t divulge too much! I shall let it unfold for itself.”

Waterproof Your Makeup With These Wallet-Friendly Products This Rainy Season https://zee.ph/waterproof-makeup/ https://zee.ph/waterproof-makeup/#comments Mon, 25 Jun 2018 03:26:09 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=23736 Ah, rainy season—when more often than not, we see runny and smudged make-up. There are many instances where we want our make-up to stay despite the pouring rain. Even with raingear, it’s best to stay cautious and avoid potential disasters. Waterproof makeup is the latest trend! Women are actually looking for products that will actually stay put day until night, under the heat of the sun or even in heavy rain.

It’s a hassle going around in Cebu, especially when we get stranded by the pouring rain, but it’s tougher when we’re worried about our make-up. Whether we are running to look for shade from the rain or sitting in a shed waiting for a bus, we still have to look our best. We listed down four must-have waterproof drugstore make-up products for the rainy season that are a bang for your buck.

Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara

Price: P350.00

Mascara is a must-have product in every woman’s make-up kit. It’s used to enhance our eyelashes, may it be to thicken, lengthen or define them. Since we want to avoid the dreaded panda-eyes, especially under the pouring rain, Maybelline’s New York Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara should be part of your rain-emergency make-up checklist.

The wand of this mascara is so unique that one brush will give your lashes the full fan effect. The slightly curved wand helps in the application since it keeps our lashes in volume—from root to top. It gives you intense dramatic look and on top of that, it’s waterproof. It helps in keeping your eyes look awake even during downpours.

LA Girl PRO-HD Concealer

LA Girl PRO-HD Concealer

Price: P320.00

A long-lasting concealer is an everyday must-have and it shouldn’t be just any concealer available out there—you need a waterproof concealer! Concealers help our uneven lines and make the dark spots vanish.

LA Girl PRO-HD Concealer doesn’t only provide good coverage; it’s also waterproof. It has many different shades that you can choose and match it with your skin tone. If you’re up to amazing quality with an affordable price, then this concealer is for you.

With this concealer set with your favorite powder, you are totally good to go this rainy season.

L’oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil

L’oreal Paris Infallible Pro-last Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil

Price: P400.00

Liquid eyeliner or eyeliner pencils are a go-to in women’s daily staple. With this moody weather, you’re going to need long-lasting waterproof eyeliners with smooth and definite strokes.

This L’oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil glides easily for a smudge-resistant eye make-up that will last all day. With its intense color, you can draw precise lines and you’re ready to face the heavy downpours without having to apply another stroke.

Nyx Full Throttle Lipstick

Nyx Full Throttle Lipstick

Price: P350.00

Whatever the season may bring, we don’t want to live in fear having our make-up melting our face especially our favorite lipsticks. We want that perfect shade and long-lasting effect without having to re-apply it every now and then.

Nyx Full Throttle Lipstick glides easily on your lips with matte finish. This long-lasting formula stays on for hours. Its consistency and formula is high-quality, guaranteeing great pigmentation.

There are challenges in keeping our makeup intact, especially during downpours. Thank the make-up gods for blessing us with impressive and excellent waterproof and smudge-proof products!

The makeup looks you should be wearing this season https://zee.ph/makeup-looks-wearing-this-season/ https://zee.ph/makeup-looks-wearing-this-season/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2017 16:20:24 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=15154 The advent of a new year always brings with it a tide of change, in our vanities as much as in the rest of our lives. When the models are strutting down the runway, we’re looking at their faces just as much as their clothes. Is contouring on its way out? How dark will this season’s smoky eye be? Will red lipstick ever go out of style? (The answer to that last question remains a firm no.)

Thankfully, we don’t have to figure it all out ourselves. MAC Cosmetics’ director of makeup artistry Gregory Alt flew in to Shangri-la Mactan Resort & Spa to school us on beauty. The MAC SS17 Pro Tour introduced the four looks that will dominate beauty this season, as created by the brand for fashion week. Gregory takes us through the concept of each face, and the products that’ll help you recreate them.

The looks at Alberta Ferretti, Prabal Gurung and Veronique Leroy

THE REAL LIFE

Unpretentious and nonchalant are some of the key words that dictate the Real look, with emphasis on how women look in real life. “Everything feels very easy, unforced,” says artist Val Garland in the MAC trends book.

The look Val created for Alberta Ferretti featured slightly smudged eyeliner, a natural lip and only the slightest hint of contouring and blush. “Carine Roitfeld meets Kate Moss,” she calls it. The smudged liner is given as much attention at Chloe, where Aaron de Mey made it look like last night’s makeup. At Desigual and Lanvin, models looked practically bare-faced, with colors that blended into their natural skin tones.

To get the look, cover up imperfections with the MAC Studio Fix Perfecting Stick, then give your brows an imperfect but groomed look with the Brow Sculpt. Complete it with the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in High Drama or Feels So Good.

The looks at Giamba, Haider Ackerman and Salvatore Ferragamo

FREE SPIRIT

Color and creativity are the highlights of the Free face, with makeup taking on a more fun and spontaneous look. “It’s the opposite of taking yourself seriously and filtering your selfies,” Val says. It’s artisanal, optimistic and eclectic—in other words, you’re encouraged to let your freak flag fly.

Bright eyes were seen throughout the runways. Geometric cateyes are done in yellow at Haider Ackerman and Ports 1961, while all sorts of colorful eye shadow were on display at Emilio Pucci, Kenzo and Ryan Lo, among others. If you’re more experimental, you can go the extra mile—there’s silver-painted eyebrows at Giamba and drawn-on circles trailing the cheekbones at Issey Miyake.

There’s a number of products on MAC’s arsenal that’d be great for the look, but what we’re really excited about are the colored mascaras. In shades of yellow, blue and purple, the In Dimension Lash is something we’re definitely adding to our vanities.

The looks at Altuzarra, Hood by Air and Simone Rocha

GET WET

Looking sweaty might have not seemed appealing during the days of the hyper matte finish, but times have changed. The Wet look is all about mimicking the way light reflects on the skin for a dewy finish.

Slicked back hair and strategic highlights gave models a bright finish at Moncler and Altuzarra. At Gareth Pugh, super glossy lips are done in dark colors, while foreheads are literally glossed in Hood by Air. In fact, it’s clear we’ll soon be putting gloss on features besides our lips. At Baja East and Blugirl, eyes are slick for an ultra-shine finish.

MAC Prep + Prime is essential for getting the dewy base for this look, and the Strobe Creams are now available in different colors for different effects.

The looks at Alexis Mabille, Paul Smith and Preen

WARM BODIES

It’s the new romantic, with soft washes and tints creating a very natural effect on the skin for the Warm look. “These colors are designed to enhance and mimic really great skin condition,” says artist Terry Barber.

He creates a very natural look at Marco De Vincenzo, where peach and pinks are given more depth with highlighter. “It’s that woman who looks chic just wearing lipstick,” he adds. The pastel palette continues at Roksanda, Paul Smith and Missoni carry on the floral theme, although at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, where petals were actually pasted on the face.

Bronzers and peach lipsticks are all you need for your Warm beauty kit. But it’s the Extra Dimension Skinfinish highlighters that really make a difference—a quick swipe leaves the most gorgeous sheen.

How to Get Your Best Brows Ever https://zee.ph/get-best-brows-ever/ https://zee.ph/get-best-brows-ever/#comments Fri, 03 Feb 2017 02:44:19 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=14984 On fleek! There’s a reason the eyebrows are the only facial feature that has merited its own slang in today’s “meme culture.” Whether you’re a beauty beginner or a total makeup fiend, you can’t deny that a well-shaped, perfectly groomed brow does wonders for your face.

A beauty line that packs a lot of personality, Benefit Cosmetics understands the importance of a pretty brow—their extensive Brow Collection has everything from a conditioning primer to a wand that gives your brows a subtle highlight. The brand recently brought in their National Brow Artist for the Philippines (yes, that is how seriously they eyebrows) Celina Fernandez to give brow wax and styling tutorials at their SM Seaside City store.

As someone who’s been doing eyebrows—and pretty perfect ones, too—since 2012, Celina knows what she’s talking about. Here are a few things we learned from her and a couple of tips so that you too can greet everyday with the best brows ever.

National Brow Artist for the Philippines Celina Fernandez has been with Benefit since 2012, and regularly attends international training sessions and workshops with other Benefit artists.

Brow waxing doesn’t hurt, if you do it right

A traumatic waxing experience had turned me off to the procedure, and Celina was eager to change my mind. She asks if I’d been using any topical treatments or had recently exfoliated. This way, she could predict how my skin would react to the wax. “Some places offer eyebrow waxing, but they just do it without really understanding the procedure,” she explains. “We make sure to tell the clients what to expect.”

Use the right wax

Benefit brow artists use a specific kind of wax that’s specially created for the face and bikini area, which means it’s gentler that what would normally be used on legs or underarms. The pearlescent formula is part of Benefit’s international standard, along with their waxing strips, tweezers and other tools.

The specially formulated wax is made for sensitive areas of the body, such as the face and bikini area.

Go from dark to light

“The usual mistake, especially with Asian women, is that they use a light pencil for the brows. That just makes you look washed out,” Celina explains. A darker brow (make sure you use light strokes to mimic hair strands) makes you look younger. Also, the general rule is that it goes from dark at the end and through the arch. The brow should get lighter as it gets closer to the center of the face.

Map it out

To find out the brow shape is the best for your face, bring some geometry into the mix. A straight line from the dimple of your nose should be where the brow starts. The nose through the outer corner of your pupil is where the arch should be. The outer corner of the nose through the corner of the eye is where the brow should end.

Here's a quick guide to mapping out your brows.

Give it a little highlight

If you want to add a bright touch, use the 3D BROWtones eyebrow enhancer for a subtle highlight.

The Brow Collection from Benefit Cosmetics includes a wide range of products that cater to every brow need, from an easy-to-use pencil that mimics real hair strands to an eyebrow primer that conditions hair and promotes growth.

A glamorous holiday look in 9 steps https://zee.ph/a-glamorous-holiday-look-in-9-steps/ https://zee.ph/a-glamorous-holiday-look-in-9-steps/#comments Mon, 07 Dec 2015 08:41:17 +0000 http://res210.servconfig.com/~zee/?p=11094 With the holidays right around the corner, events and parties are happening left and right. Make sure you look your best for each one of them. Zee Lifestyle asks makeup artist Arnauld how to achieve a glamorous holiday look in nine simple steps, using MAC Cosmetics.

Get this sultry, dramatic look in just 9 simple steps

Get this sultry, dramatic look in just nine simple steps

Step 1: Skin Primer

Step 1: Skin Primer

STEP 1: SKIN PRIMER

Every great look starts with a great base. Prep your entire face using MAC PREP+PRIME Skin Base Visage.

This lightweight gel lotion is formulated with special-effect silicones that neutralizes redness and evens out your skin tone while making you look radiant. It also improves the application of foundation.

After applying, let it set for a minute or two.

Step 2: Foundation

Step 2: Foundation

STEP 2: FOUNDATION

Apply MAC STUDIO FIX FLUID Liquid Foundation.

Comfortable and long-wearing, this product combines a natural matte finish and medium-to-full build able coverage. It also protects your skin from the sun with broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 15. It blends easily and evenly, minimizing the appearance of pores and imperfections for a more flawless look.

This product is best for oily skin. It comes in 36 shades.

Step 3

Step 3: Concealer

STEP 3: CONCEALER

Conceal flaws, skin discolorations and dark spots such as under eye circles using MAC PRO LONGWEAR CONCEALER.

This fluid concealer, available in 16 shades, provides medium-to-full coverage with a natural matte finish that lasts up to 15 hours.

Step 4: Eye Shadow (Base)

Step 4: Eye Shadow (Base)

STEP 4: EYE SHADOW (BASE)

The MAC PRO LONGWEAR PAINT POT is a long-wearing blendable cream shadow that can be worn alone or with other products. It also serves as concealer and eye primer, making the colors of your eyeshadow pop out more.

This product, available in 26 different shades, builds coverage without looking heavy or cake, and will not streak or crease. Here, Arnauld uses the Paint Pot in Painterly.

Step 5: Eye Shadow (Crease)

Step 5: Eye Shadow (Crease)

STEP 5: EYE SHADOW (CREASE)

Apply MAC EYE SHADOW (pictured: Paradisco) on the crease of the eye to create definition. You may also apply it to the entire eyelid, depending on the style you prefer.

This highly-pigmented powder blends evenly and can be used wet and dry.

Step 6: Eye Shadow (Definition)

Step 6: Eye Shadow (Defining)

STEP 6: EYE SHADOW (DEFINING)

Overlay a darker shade using a cat-eye effect, and blend well over the crease. Arnauld uses the Espresso shade to create a more dramatic look.

Step 7: Eyebrows & Eyelashes

Step 7: Eyebrows & Eyelashes

STEP 7: EYEBROWS & EYELASHES

Define your eyes with eyeliner. The MAC FLUIDLINE in Blacktrack provides the precision of a liquid liner with a silkier, softer finish. The product goes on foolproof with a brush in an easy dip-and-stroke action. Arnauld suggests applying this to your lash line using MAC brush in 266, 209 or 210.

After the eyeliner, open the eyes further with the EXTENDED PLAY LASH MASCARA, a  waterproof formula that lasts for up to 16 hours. Press the wand into the lashes as close to the roots as possible, and ‘shimmy’ the brush from root to tip. Continue to build until the desired effect is achieved.

Complete the look with the FLUID BROW GELCREME in True Brunette. This is a long-wearing waterproof gel in a pot that gives precise definition to eyebrows. Apply this product using the MAC brush in 208.

Step 8: Blush, Contour & Highlighting

Step 8: Blush, Contour & Highlighting

STEP 8: BLUSH, CONTOUR AND HIGHLIGHT

To achieve a natural looking shade, apply MAC POWDER BLUSH (pictured: Harmony) to cheeks, making sure to avoid harsh lines. You can also use this shade to contour at the same time.

Add a high-impact shimmering glow to the skin with MAC EXTRA DIMENSION HIGHLIGHTER (pictured, Whisper of Gilt). Sweep this formula to the upper cheeks, to the temple, and to the tip of your nose to sculpt and highlight your face. This leaves a luminous and well-defined finish.

Step 9: Lipstick & Finishing Touches

Step 9: Lipstick & Finishing Touches

STEP 9: LIPSTICK AND FINISHING TOUCHES

Lip pencil is necessary for shaping, lining, or filling in lips. Arnauld applies the MAC LIP PENCIL in Trust in Red directly to the lips as a base. Then he applies MAC LIPSTICK in Diva using the MAC brush 313 for a clean and polished look.

Complete the holiday glam look with the MAC PREP+PRIME TRANSPARENT FINISHING POWDER. This is a silky finishing powder that provides an invisible way to set makeup.

The result: A glamorous look perfect for the holidays
