Adulting Woes: Am I Getting There?

“Adulting” is a handful, but all of us must start somewhere. A great big world awaits, just take that one courageous step forward.

It’s adulting season for most of us millennials and would you look at the time? 2018 has made most 90’s kids up in their butts and going to work already. When you’re in your early 20s and you’re clearly at that “bridge” everyone said they’d cross only when they’d get there, you’ll realize that you’re not really ready for it and you haven’t prepared a bit.

“Adulting”, coined as a term to mean “to carry out one or more of the duties and responsibilities expected of fully developed individuals”, has been a word that has been used by most teenagers going on their 20s and graduating with their degrees. It’s more than just being mature enough to settle “the beef” with peers. It involves money, and how you plan not to run out of it.

If you are an avid social media scroller, you might have come across this term, as its usage has greatly increased in the past year in most social networking sites. Is the sharing of #adulting experiences a coping mechanism for most in this generation?

That being said, we’ve round up some of the most common obstacles an “adulting” millennial is facing at this very minute.

Finding a… job?

This might very well be at every adult’s top list as it is your only means to get your needs. After all, we are great big fans of not starving ourselves to death, right? Budgeting is also part of this, as it is very rare that you’d be able to keep your understandably comfortable lifestyle back when mommy and daddy stuffed bills into your wallet—you’d probably need to cut off some monthly trips to the salon and those spontaneous cafe trips.

One of the most important signs that tell you you’re on the train to “adultville” is really when you get to tell the difference between needs and wants. Prioritizing what to buy is part of the “adulting” lifestyle. It might be hard at first, when you have to choose to go to the grocery store rather than the outlet shops but, hey, you got to do what you got to do.

Register yourself

You might think you are already #LegitAF but girl, you can’t be when you aren’t registered to government agencies. May this be for insurance, or to vote, or even for traveling the world, you need government certificates of registration for anything you may come across in all that aduting jazz.

There’s a lot of things you need to register for once you land a job; you’ve got health insurance, Social Security System and all other certificates and licenses that help you not only be an adult, but a good citizen of the country, and yes, this also means you get to pay taxes and bills already!

Moving out

You’ll know it’s the real deal when you decide to “get out of the nest” you’ve been nurtured in your whole life. If you don’t clean the day before, you can’t wake up to a clean place. If you don’t do groceries, food won’t magically appear in your fridge. That’s the reality of finally having to manage your life.

With this, it’s either you’d get to learn how to cook, or you’re faced with instant noodles and easy-to-open cans three meals a day. You get to entertain guests in your humble abode, and clean up right after. Probably the best part about living on your own is having no curfews. But it can bite you back when you forget to do your laundry and you’ve got nothing decent to wear to work. Every little thing about your life is finally in your hands, and it’s up to you to make that thought a good thing or a bad one.

Thinking Twice About that Saturday Night Out

Your home has been your haven. The heavy traffic isn’t worth it anymore for you to enjoy drinks out at some place with your friends. Back when you were in college, you’d very much look forward to the weekend to unwind from all the school stress. But now that stress is three times more than before, you’d rather reward yourself with 8-12 hours of sleep instead of losing yourself to deafening songs and unlimited bottles of drinks!

You’d be the “tita” everyone thinks is “KJ”, but maybe you’re just saving up for something more than what drinks can buy, or just looking for that relaxation that a room filled with drinking and dancing can’t fill. Sleep tight, tita of Cebu!

Talking about.. *long term goals*

You’re not just saving up for something, you’re probably doing a to-do list or arranging a timeline of the things you’d want to transpire in the coming years. You’re not just living the now, you’re contemplating for tomorrow! Gone were the days you’d leave the future to fate, because you are actually putting in the effort to ensure that you get a smooth ride. Whether it may be plans with a significant other, your own wheels, or plans to further your career or travel abroad, that timeline’s looking good because you’re done with just “going with the flow”.

Life just gets harder as we age, but that just means you’ve conquered more yesterdays today. Some may not be ready to say goodbye to being a kid and the privilege of having to act like one, carefree and all, but it all comes with age. It could very well be the time for you to start flapping those big wings and soar higher than before. “Adulting” is a handful, but all of us must start somewhere. A great big world awaits, just take that one courageous step forward.

37 Years of High Fashion; Arcy Gayatin leaves a Legacy of Edginess and Elegance

Arcy Gayatin: A Legacy of Luxury in Fabrication

By:  Allain Dumon Fonte

The brand Arcy Gayatin gave the Queen City of the South a distinct reputation in the fashion industry.  The fashion line of Arcy Gayatin sets the bar higher each year for clothing luxury and fabrication techniques.

Araceli “Arcy” Ancajas Gayatin is the daughter Galileo Ancajas and Remedios Zanoria Ancajas who founded Cebu’s home brand, Gal’s Bakery.  Arcy went to the University of San Carlos and studied Political Science.  And just like Dr. Muccia Prada, who completed her Ph.D. in Political Science and established the luxury line of Prada, Arcy also got in touch with her artistic side and started her own fashion line.  However, it was not Prada that influenced Arcy.  Arcy was introduced to fashion and tailoring at a very young age by her mother, Madame Remedios Anacajas whom they dearly call Mama Eme.  Mama Eme was running a tailoring business back then.  It was called Arabel; named after Arcy and her sister Belma.  Ara from Araceli and Bel from Belma.  In those years, Arcy was fascinated by fabrics and was intrigued by how to manipulate the fabrics to come up with fashion-forward designs without compromising comfort and taste.

After 37 years of creating haute couture pieces for the most fashionable personalities in the Philippines, Arcy Gayatin is now laying down her sketchpads and pens to rest.  As she enjoys her retirement, may be on a cruise to the Bahamas or a holiday to the Swiss Alps, Arcy Gayatin has left the fashion industry a legacy of elegant and edgy clothing ensembles that understand and define the shape of women; without compromising comfort and good taste.

To salute the lady who brought Cebu fashion to the world, a retrospective exhibition of Arcy’s incomparable masterpieces can be seen today at Ayala Center Cebu’s The Gallery; curated by fashion editor and writer, Clint Holton Potestas, and interior and fashion designer, Jul Oliva.

BALANCE.  Arcy Gayatin is known for her perfect symmetrical lines when fabricating.  She knows how to balance edginess and class; understanding well the strength and the finesse of a woman.

RHYTHM.  Arcy’s expertise in draping and fabric manipulation can be seen in how she achieves rhythm between architectural lines and soft fabrics like silk and cashmere.

TEXTURE.  With her thorough knowledge on fabrics, Arcy Gayatin has achieved the perfection of fabrication by working on different types of fabrics and creating a single piece of art out of them.

HARMONY.  The simplicity of the silhouette plus the intricacy of the details create a wonderful harmony, making Arcy Gayatin’s design a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

The photos below show an up-close look at the intricacy and the exquisite craftsmanship of Arcy Gayatin’s fabrication techniques:
